It is currently accepted that a positive Western blot (WB) HIV antibody test is synonymous with HIV infection and the attendant risk of developing and dying from AIDS.

This test is done to confirm a positive screening for HIV antibodies. To date, the only routinely used methods for demonstrating the presence of HIV are the ELISA and WB antibody tests. Both tests check the presence of antibodies i your blood to proteins of the Virus. However whereas the HIV antibodies EIA tests is performed by challenging the blood sample against a control which carries a mixture of HIV proteins, the HIV antibodies Western Blot looks at several specific proteins typical of the immunodeficiency virus.
