Subject: concerned
I have been sexually active involved with a man for about 10 months.
However after one of our latest get togethers I ended up with a
fever blister/cold sore. I am concerned because he performed oral sex on
me also. After reading on several websites about herpes I became very
scared that he might be a carrier and could have passed it on to me
(since I ended up with a coldsore) as genital herpes. I am married and
am scared to death of passing it to him. After the cold sore outbreak
this gentleman and I had a long talk and he informed me that his wife
gets coldsores all the time. He didn't know that it was something that
he could spread to me as he never gets coldsores himself.
Please help!!!!
Hello!
We used to call them Oral Herpes Hominis and Genital Herpes Hominis. but
that was in the Middle Age. With the Renaissance and, specially in the
year of 69, things got upside down and now 30% of Herpes infections in
the genitals show the presence of the "lip service" virus. Enter a new
distinction: Herpes type 1 and Herpes type 2. Do you understand what 30%
means? It means that the distinction has only a "social" value. But in
what kind of social system? One based on tell it the way it is. Noooo.
One based on telling it the way it appears. Nooooo. ONE BASED on
......you guessed it. So now what? I am not interested in assessing
behaviors but I am interested in what makes us human. Being scared may
be entertaining but doesn't make any difference. SO TALK TO "HIM".
Education and communication is what works in Herpes while we wait for
the vaccine. It is known that Viral shedding occurs even when the skin
is intact and so it is auto inoculation ( moving it from point A to
point B}. We have excellent antiviral drugs for acute attacks of Herpes
or suppressive therapy if you start having flare ups. Get the ‘triangle"
tested by those few doctors in the know and who care about Herpes
infections and remember:. Observe, Communicate, Change... if you want,
and move on with life.
Thank you for asking

Subject: herpes and my daughter
My husband and I have herpes and my 4 year old daughter has been getting
real red in her private area. I am concerned that she has in some way
contracted it from us by toilet, us wiping her when she uses the
bathroom or something like that. I had a blood test done on her at the
doctors office. The first part came back fine but the second number came
back just slightly elevated. What does this mean?
Hi Tanya,
There are several tests for Herpes. The culture of the blisters content,
if present, is the gold standard, though there are many false negatives.
Blood tests for Herpes are also available. They are done to detect the
presence of antibodies to the virus which appear during the acute phase
of infection, usually within a week from contact. They increase to a
peak level and then slowly fall down to the point of being no longer
detectable while a second class of antibodies start to appear. This
second group of antibodies stays with you the rest of your life as a
memory of the infection. There are two small windows of time, the first
few days and at the end of the second/ third month when you could get
some false negative tests. The is why is better to retest one or more
time to be sure. Since the test involves both type 1 and type 2 what you
get is a ratio of the two whose normal value is between 0.00 and 0.90 .
Between 0.91 and 1.09 the test is equivocal and over 1.09 the test is
positive.. When one does the test for "long term memory antibodies" also
called IgG antibodies, which appear in your blood between 2 weeks to
three months from the date of suspected contact and stay with you for
the rest of our life, one can also do a typology and clearly distinguish
between type 1 and type 2.
Give a big hug to your daughter for me.

Dr. Gian,
I recently had a
positive culture for Herpes type II but my blood test was only
positive for Herpes type I. What does this mean? The guy is
emphatically denying and if I didn’t have this culture, I would
believe him.
Sue
Hi Sue,
It means that you have not yet developed antibodies for type 2. Retest
later on, may be in four months. By the way, is not uncommon to get
infected by a person who is not aware of having type 2 Herpes virus. So
the guy may be telling the truth and still have the virus. May be you
could ask him or he could volunteer to get tested.
Peace.
