Hi Chris,

I believe you are referring as " certain stds" the following : Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and Trichomonas. These are the ones where we use a swab inserted into the urethra. However today we have also a urine test available for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea which is widely used and very accurate. It is called
the PCR test and it is done both in males and females. This is what we do. And we also, of course, do many other tests for STD, such as HIV, Syphilis, Herpes, Hepatitis etc. which require instead the taking of blood samples.

Thank for using our testing centers.

Dr. Gian

Hello John,
A urine test for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea is especially appreciated by men since it avoids inserting a swab into the urethra. The test is very accurate and sensitive since it utilizes PCR technology and will be not affected by you drinking water prior to testing. However it is recommended to produce the first voided specimen in the morning to improve the detection of bacterial DNA. We tell our Clients not to urinate within one hour prior to collection and to collect the first 15 to 20 mL of voided urine (using the first part of the stream) in a plastic, preservative-free sterile urine specimen cup. The urine specimen is refrigerated immediately at 2 to 8 degrees C (36 to 46 degrees F) and transported to the laboratory on wet ice within 24 hours. Our lab uses the Amplicor(R) Chlamydia/ Gonorrhea Test manufactured by Roche Diagnostics.

Women, and men, often have Chlamydia and Gonorrhea, two of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), for months or years without even knowing it. If left untreated, both diseases can have devastating long-term health effects, such as, for women, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), increased risks associated with infertility and HIV-1 disease, and for men, complications such as extreme pain upon urination.

Since both of these STDs can be easily treated with a single dose of oral
medication once detected, it makes good sense to be tested early on,
particularly if you suspect you or your partner might be at risk.

Wish you well.

Dr. Gian

Subject: should i get tested?

Dr. i have been in a relationship since march of this year my boyfriend had seen a girl before me the last time they had sex was in january. just a few days ago she said she had gonnorrhea and claims he gave it to her is it possible she has had this since january? he doesnt have any symptons and neither do i would the disease live that long without showing symptons? its been its been 9 months since they had sex.what are the symptons? and is there a home test for this? thank you l

Hi Li,
claims are claims. A claim may be an orienting behavior or a judgment. Which one do you think it is? Was he the one who gave the infection to her? Possible but very unlikely since both of you have been symptoms free. Home test for Gonorrhea. Yes, you can get one of the Kit from STDWeB.com and collect your and your boyfriend urine and ship it to our Lab. This test is highly sensitive and specific for both GC (Gonorrhea) and Chlamydia.
Happy New Year.
Dr. Gian
