I had oral sex with a new partner and 2 days later developed swollen glands in my neck and a sore throat. The back of my throat has a yellow coating, which is not the typical appearance of strep. I have been cultured for GC and Chlamydia, and was given Augmentin for 10 days. After reading your site, it seems that this is the incorrect antibiotic to treat both infections. Is the dose and/or antibiotic different for oral infections? What should the treatment be? I am a health professional and have access to samples and do not want to pay another copay just ot change the antibiotic. I do not want to wait for test results as my throat is very uncomfortable. 24 hours of dosing has not decreased the sx at all.

Hello,

Augmentin is a valid treatment for strep pharyngitis but for Chlamydia pharyngitis the treatment of choice is Doxycicline HCl 100 mg every 12 hours for seven days or a single dose of 1 gm of Zithromax.

Be well.

Thank you for your response, but I also need to know the dosing for GC. I took Cipro 500mg x  1 dose as recommended by the CDC, but continue to have the yellow drainage in the back of my throat as well as a burning sensation in my sinuses. There is also significant periorbital pain. I am trying to keep this out of my regular medical records because the tests are done at my work. I took a course of Zithromaz and it helped some, but still have this residual problem with sinus pain.  I really appreciate your assistance.

Hi,
One single Cipro 500mg is OK coverage for Gonorrhea unless you live in Hawaii or California where Gonorrhea is developing resistance. Or a good Rocephin 125 mg shot should do it. However, remember that sore throats and sinusitis are usually due to garden variety of bacteria and that is what is probably going on here

You don't need to reply to this, but I wanted to let you know that I appreciate your assistance more than you can ever know. By the way, I do live in CA. The MD who did the throat culture at my request (GC and Chlamydia) seemed very uncomfortable with the idea. I have been trying to get the results for 1 week. I think they are positive and so they are uncomfortable letting me know. I've called 4 times and they keep saying they will get back to me. I'll go into the office next week if no call over the weekend and do a little pushing.

Again, thanks for a very meaningful service.
