Chlamydia

Hi!

I was diagnosed positive for Chlamydia 4 months ago. I was treated with a onetime use powder mix. The burning while peeing did not go away and I went back for another test. I took the same onetime use powder stuff, but was told my results were negative for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. Again the burning did not go away, so I went back for a third test but this time I was given Doxycycline 100MG which I took properly. I was told negative for both infections again, but the burning though much duller is currently still there when I pee. Also during all this I have not been sexually active. So question #1 - what is going on with this and what can I do? Question #2 – Three months ago after I was told I was negative I very slightly and for less than two seconds inserted myself into a female who I KNOW IS CLEAN. I don’t want to say anything to her unless I have to. Since she hasn’t had any symptoms I’d like to think she didn’t catch anything, is that a possibility?

Thanks Doc

Hi,

You were treated with Zithromax powder and Doxycycline Hyclate, both for Chlamydia. So Chlamydia should be well and done, unless you have a particular resistant form of Chlamydia. You may want to consider also being tested for Trichomonas which requires a different type of antibiotics. . I would make your new partner aware of the situation and have her tested also.

Be well.

Dear Dr. Gian:

My girlfriend and I have been together for nine months. We had sex for the first time on January 18, 2004. On January 26th, she went to the doctor because she suspected that she might have a bladder infection. She was prescribed an antibiotic, and then the medication was changed to another antibiotic. We both have been monogamus the entire time of our relationship, but on October 4th my girlfriend suspected another bladder infection. She visited the doctor on October 5th and was prescribed Ciprol 1000 mg. for seven days. During that same period, I had a slight discharge and soreness in my mouth, but no pain when I urinated. I visited the doctor and explained the situation with the doctor. She ordered urine cultures for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. When I got my results, I tested positive for Gonorrhea. We have both been treated for this. My question is what is the possibility that this was a result of being infected by a partner we had before we were together? This last time that she had sex with someone else was August 13, 2003; my last time was January 17, 2004.
In 1974, while in the military, I was diagnosed and treated for Gonnorrhea. The symptoms were very apparent: discharge, burning sensation during urination, and pain. Can you explain why my symptoms this time were so mild, when the first time they were so definitive?

Thank you,

Hi,

It seems to me that the most important piece of information is that you had a previous infection with the Gonococcus bacterium in 1974. Re-infection...I have seen this over and over. It may be a matter of behavior in repeating the same mistakes or it may be a matter of poorly treated primary infection, or a sign of antibiotic resistance, as recently reported in Hawaii and California, or a combination of these factors bur this is not a uncommon situation both for Gonorrhea and
Chlamydia.
You do not say whether your girlfriend was also diagnosed for GC. However I see that she took a Cipro dose enough for an army and so she should be all right. May be you want to consider retesting your urine in a couple of months.

Be well.

Dr. Gian

Can Chlamydia lie dormant before it is detected?

Subject: Question

I was recently diagnosed with Chlamydia. The last time I was tested that I remember was 6 years ago and my results were negative. I have only had one sex partner in this time frame, my husband, and he says he has been faithful and I know I have not slept with anyone else. Is it possible that my results were wrong 6 years ago?

Hi,

Yes. It is possible that 6 years ago your test result was a false negative. Like it is possible that the new test is a false positive. However the Gene Probe methodology, and I assume this was used, is both highly sensitive and specific and cases of false negative and/or positive are rare..

Be well.

Hello Doctor

Hello Dr. Gian!!! Do you know, if I get a urine test to check for Chlamydia in my urine, do they ONLY check for the STDS? I don't want them to say.. "no you don't have any STDS but you do have.... _________"". Whatever fits in the blank. I don't want them to do that. If I want to get a STD urine test I only want results for that specific thing. The STD. Is that what they do?

Irene

Hi Irene,

The answer is yes. The lab will only test for Chlamydia, which is one of the STD's, if that is the test which is being requested by your Doctor or by the STDWeB Doctor. They will only run what is specified in the Doctor order.
